It turned out that the Stellar Empire's weapons - like Plasma guns - operate on pure magic. I mean, not exactly operate, but to use or otherwise tamper with them, one needs to bond with the weapon on a magical level. Actual sorcery is not needed, anyone can be trained... even if in some cases, it's a long and sad process. To the point - now we can operate said weapons, or take them apart to learn their secrets.
