Mining ships make easy, if not too valuable targets. They survey an area then proceed to extract valuable minerals, which takes a few days. These missions are flown by various factions, mostly Traders but also the Academy and local govts - so be sure whom you're killing while on the ground. Mining ships always perform prolonged landings in the wild; that's where they're easy to attack.
